* RUSSIAN ice hockey player Alexei Cherepanov, 19, died today following a heart attack suffered during a match in Moscow.

The Avangard Omsk player collapsed and died while going back to the replacements bench towards the end of the third period of a match against Vitiaz Chekhov.

Cherepanov was immediately taken to hospital but doctors were not able to save him. He had helped Russia win the 2007 world junior championships and came third in the 2006/07 Russian ice hockey championships.

The New York Rangers, who had made the talented youngster the 17th overall selection in the 2007 National Hockey League draft, observed a moment of silence in his honour prior to their NHL game on Monday against the New Jersey Devils.

“We are extremely saddened by the tragic passing of Alexei,” Rangers general manager Glen Sather said.

“On behalf of the New York Rangers organization, I would like to extend our deepest sympathies to his family. Alexei was an intelligent, energetic young man with tremendous talent and an extremely bright future.”
